  5.     Talk about bipartisanship. Until two days before the
  6. election, Ben Bagert was the Republican Party's official
  7. nominee to run for the Louisiana Senate seat held by three-term
  8. Democratic incumbent J. Bennett Johnston Jr. But state
  9. representative and former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke was
  10. also in the primary race as a Republican, running a campaign
  11. that played on white resentment over affirmative action and
  12. welfare. Though polls gave Johnston about half the vote in the
  13. Oct. 6 primary, they also showed Bagert, a state senator, badly
  14. trailing Duke. That opened up the possibility of a Nov. 6 runoff
  15. between the two front runners. The prospect of the former
  16. Klansman becoming the G.O.P.'s standard-bearer made state and
  17. national party leaders so unhappy that eight Republican
  18. Senators declared their support for Johnston. Then Bagert made
  19. the ultimate sacrifice: he withdrew from the race. The
  20. bipartisan blocking maneuver seemed to be paying off. Early
  21. returns gave Johnston 56% of the vote, enough to win the
  22. election outright.
